Starbucks Reads for Literacy!
Starbucks Coffee sponsors Oregon Literacy's Read Across Oregon Read-a-Thon.
Who: Starbucks Coffee, Oregon Literacy, Inc., and your organization.
What: The 2nd annual "Read Across Oregon" Read-a-Thon.
When: March 1st - March 31st
Where: That's the best part, you can do it from the comfort of your own home, school, library, while you ride the bus or anywhere else you can sit down and read!
Starbucks coffee is using reading as a team building activity. Beginning March 1st, employees from various Starbucks locations in Portland will "Read for Those Who Can't" and join in the effort to advance literacy through access, advocacy and alliances. Along with Oregon Literacy, Starbucks will be helping the 1 out of 5 Oregonians who read at a level that does not allow them to comprehend the instructions on an aspirin bottle, locate an intersection on a street map or help their children with their homework.
Oregon Literacy challenges your organization to get involved! Encourage your organization, be it a literary group, office, college buddies, that poker group you get to together with every third Tuesday of the month or your fraternity, to participate in Read Across Oregon. You and your organization can turn reading a book into more than simply text on a page.
Whether you are reading the latest in a series you absolutely love or are forced to read that classic in your English class (textbooks do count!), Read Across Oregon is the way for you to make your reading into something bigger. By obtaining pledges (per page or a flat amount) from family members, teachers, neighbors, co-workers, and even yourself. You can make a huge difference in the lives of Oregonians from the comfort of your own home, school, library or your favorite park bench. All funds raised go directly towards Oregon Literacy's programs and services.
