Programs and Services
Founded in 1966, Oregon Literacy is a statewide non-profit organization that seeks to
advance literacy among adult Oregonians by connecting students and tutors with local
literacy programs across the state. Based in Portland, they do this through a toll-free
referral line. Oregon Literacy also has a bookstore offering free/low-cost reading
materials for students and tutors.
• Tutor Help Line: This hotline gives tutors support, materials,
information and tips for teaching adults.
• Events: Oregon Literacy helps coordinate events throughout the
year such as “Read Across Oregon” in March or “Chalk It Up for Literacy” in September to
bring literacy issues into the public eye and help fund programs which provide literacy
services.
• Publications: Oregon Literacy has a monthly newsletter for
volunteer tutors called LitBits. Also published is a quarterly newsletter called Literally
Speaking.
• Media Kits: Oregon Literacy makes yearly media kits for its
affiliate programs. Information is included to help those local programs contact the media,
government, and businesses for support.
Financial Support
Primary sources of financial support come from grants, corporate donations, and the
general public.
Goals
Oregon Literacy will continue to facilitate the highest quality literary services for
adult learners statewide, expand its role as a leader in uniting the voices of literacy
in order to educate the community, and coordinate statewide resources in order to
eliminate the duplication of effort and enhance literary services.
