What is the Learner Web?
The Learner Web is an internet accessed application providing free online support for adults seeking to improve their reading, writing, language and math skills, prepare for the GED, or work toward other learning goals. The Learner Web is designed to support, not replace, existing educational resources in the community. It is a bridge between self-study and local programs, libraries and social services.
What is the Need?
- 1 in 5 Oregonians are at the lowest levels of literacy
- Only 10% of those in need are served by current programs and services
- Many adults are unable to attend traditional programs because of conflicts with work, transportation and/or childcare.
- Many adults engage in self study activities, regardless of their background in formal learning programs (according to the PSU Longitudinal Study of Adult Learning)
Personalized for Each Learner
By creating free online accounts, learners will be able to:
- Identify personal learning goals
- Create a personalized learning plan
- Find relevant learning resources in the community and on the internet
- Call a toll-free hotline for Learner Web assistance
- Connect with tutors on-line or face-to-face
Partnership is the Key
The key to the success of Learner Web lies with our partners who will lend their valuable experience and ideas to the project. Oregon Literacy is in the process of establishing a Learner Web Steering Committee. It is the aim of the Committee that its members are representative of the various community resources with which the LW project seeks to connect including libraries, community based organizations, community colleges, and businesses.
