English for Speakers of Other Languages Initiative

Vision and Values

Oregon Literacy and Oregon Community Foundation are partnering to revitalize volunteer based community English tutoring programs throughout Oregon.

Volunteer based tutoring programs allow communities to:

  • reduce barriers to English instruction - such as waiting lists, childcare, and transportation.

  • create opportunities for community members to promote education

  • create opportunities to share culture and build relationships across cultures

  • improve relationships with diverse clients/members

  • provide individuals with confidence and skills for using English outside the home

Curriculum and Language

The curriculum is aimed at supporting and building-up community based programs.  Oregon Literacy provides workshops, site visits, and assistance related to volunteer recruitment, English language learner recruitment, record keeping, and instruction.

Language activities and instruction encourage communication, creating meaning, and mastering language competencies. The materials and activities focus on language functions and using language to navigate cultural systems.

Volunteers are trained with techniques to use materials that spring from real-life situations, focusing activities around participants' needs and goals.

Status

The initiative was piloted in the Willamette region, specifically Marion, Polk, and Yamhill counties, between 2005 and 2007. The initiative will be expanding into central, southern, and eastern Oregon in 2008-2010.
