Chalk It Up for Literacy is always in need of volunteers! Shifts are available and we provide coffee/light breakfast in the morning and lunch in the afternoon to all volunteers/artists.
Some of the available opportunities include:
- Event planner (help us plan for the event)
- Set up (morning, multiple volunteers needed)
- Event Assistant(s) (will help with a variety of tasks at the event such as monitoring the food booths, distributing information about Oregon Literacy and other tasks as needed)
- Break down (afternoon, multiple volunteers needed)
- Photographer FILLED
- Artist liaison(s)
- Face painter(s)
- Story-teller(s)
- Literacy advocate (interact with passers-by and attendees)
- Masseuse(s)
All opportunities are offered on the day of the event, which takes place August 9th, from 10:00 - 4:00, in Pioneer Square. Set up starts at 8:00 AM and staggered arrivals in that area are accepted, but please plan to be there by 9:00. If you would like to help out at the event please fill out the signup form. Would you like to offer your artist skills to support literacy? We need talented artists to make Chalk It Up the best it can be! You do not have to be a professional artist (though some of the participants are), but we do ask that you submit sample(s) of your work or a website link and be approved to join by Oregon Literacy. The process is very simple: to sign up please just fill out our short form. You will be contacted soon after we receive it. Artist Signup Thank you!

Would your company or organization like to sponsor the 6th Annual Chalk It Up for Literacy? Sponsorships range from $500 to $10,000 and provide excellent value along with superior exposure. Does your organization have a connection to literacy? Would you like to promote your programs/services during the very festive 6th Annual Chalk It Up for Literacy event? OLI welcomes community partners to request a table at the event. Tens of thousands of visitors come through Pioneer Square on any given day and that means a wonderful opportunity to interact with both the general public as well as art and literacy lovers! The generous donation of needed supplies help the proceeds of the event to benefit much needed literacy services throughout Oregon. Here is a wish-list of some our needs; please contact Elizabeth Raymond, Executive Director at elizabeth@oregonliteracy.org or 503-244-3898 if you (or someone you know) are able to help provide any of the following items:
- Canopies (used on this day only for shading the band, exhibitors, etc.)
- Advertising (OLI requests space in any media format in to order to promote CIU.)
- Printing (OLI needs to print large banners, small posters and a variety of material.)
- Refreshments (beverages, lunches for the artists/volunteers, etc.)
- Chairs and folding tables (for this day only)
- Table clothes and table skirts
- Large matte boards
- High end chalk (like Sargent's)
- A roll of brown "butcher paper" (to use as ground cover)
- Easels (telescoping tripods work well)
- Other general items
