Welcome!

The Benton Literacy Council was formed in 1968. It is the local chapter of Proliteracy Worldwide.

The Council is a a non-profit organization administered wholly by volunteers.

The goal of the Benton Literacy Council is to improve the basic literacy skills of county residents.

The Mission of the Council is to satisfy the following:

• Teach non-readers to listen, speak, read and write English.

• General tutoring support to adults who have literacy difficulties. This includes native English speakers as well as those with English as a Second Language (ESL)

• To sensitize readers to the difficulties encountered by the non-reader and to give practical means to direct the non-readers toward finding help.

• To recruit and train tutors to teach, one to one, native speakers of English and/or speakers of other languages.

• Administer the Summer Reading Improvement Program (SRIP) for children aged 6-12 who need extra help with reading, spelling and writing.
