Barbara Bush appeared in Portland with her husband George, then the Vice-President of the United States, in 1982. Mrs. Bush claimed, "I'm not an expert in anything, but I'm a cheerleader." She touted her belief that there was a correlation between crime and illiteracy, and claimed, "Because of George's job, I can come to something like this today and really encourage people who have a chance to do some really good things."
