OLI History

Oregon Literacy was founded in 1966 by literacy pioneers Martha Entler, Pat Gerrard, Phyllis Newland, and Nancy Smith. Dr. Freeda Hartzfeld-Jones of Lewis & Clark college was another key player in the early days of Oregon Literacy. For further information on the history & founding of Oregon Literacy, read the second edition of our newsletter "Literally Speaking".

Dr. Laubach was twice honored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and by a 1984 commemorative U.S. postage stamp. The "Each One Teach One" motto was originated by Dr. Laubach, who founded Laubach Literacy International.

One of our helpful volunteers Troy has constructed a timeline of the history of Oregon Literacy. To view the timeline - click here.
